McDonald’s smoothies – healthy or not?

McDonald Smoothie

Fast Food Giants  And Smoothies

McDonald’s was one of the first fast food companies which tried to seperate itself from competitors by introducing a new range of so called healty alternatives.

After the coffee shop boom McDonald’s followed a new trend and offered a small range of smoothies, made with real fruits.

So we asked us the question if these smoothies are really healthy and if we are really talking about fresh fruits. If this is the case, McDonald’s might really have the opportunity to gain a market share in the smoothie business.

Currently customers can enjoy the smoothies in two different flavours – strawberry banana and wild berry. The drinks are made with real fruit puree and concentrated fruit juice. As we know concentrated juice includes some artificial ingredients of course, like citric acid of course. But in fairness, the amount is quiet small and many juice bars are using those concentrated juices. The blend is pre-made therefore do not expect fresh fruits beeing chopped up and added to your smoothie.

The calorie content seems to be reasonable. A small smoothie contains only about 210 calories. Like all other smoothies and juices the amount of sugar in it is incredable. If you compare it to chocolate bar you will have twice the amount in two candy bars.

Over all a McDonald’s smoothie is probably one of the healhiest products you can enjoy in a fast food store. A pre-made blend is used by many coffee bars and juice bars as well. If you find the time, look for a more fresh and natural version of smoothies.
